Our History

Shalom has its origins in the early 1960s with the establishment of the Hillel Foundation and then the building of Shalom College.

history hero

The Shalom Institute operates Shalom College and Shalom Collective, tracing our roots back to the early 1950s with the establishment of the Hillel Foundation in 1954 and Shalom College in 1972.

Since 1973, we have been a vibrant programming organisation at the heart of the Sydney Jewish community, creating transformative experiences and celebrating Jewish identity, culture, and tradition.

From our modest origins to establishing ourselves as a pillar of communal life, we have continually adapted and grown to meet the ever-changing needs of a vibrant and diverse Jewish community.

In 2025, we rebranded Shalom to Shalom Collective, better reflecting our mission to foster contemporary Jewish experiences where culture, identity, and community can thrive.
